Using the 21-gene assay from core needle biopsies to choose neoadjuvant therapy for breast cancer: A multicenter trial

Bear HD, Wan W, Robidoux A, Rubin P, et al. (2017). Journal of Surgical Oncology. PubMed 28407247 · DOI 10.1002/jso.24610 · PubMed record

What kind of source: Small multicenter feasibility trial. Where it sits in the summary: Still being studied. Back to the summary

What it says, in plain language

Shows the test can be run on a core needle biopsy before surgery, in a study that used it to choose treatment given before surgery. This is a different use from the after-surgery decision in Mom’s case.

How these quotes were checked

Follow the passage links above to the included paper or public source record.

Full text, author manuscript. The publicly available PMC author manuscript was retrieved on 2026-09-08 and read. Abstract quotes were checked against the cached PubMed record; body-text quotes were checked by exact string match against that manuscript. An author manuscript can differ in wording from the final journal version.

Limits of this source

Sixty-four patients; a feasibility study about pre-surgery treatment, not a test of outcomes. Two published errata exist. The 2021 erratum (PubMed 34314518, read 2026-09-10) reclassifies one patient’s surgical result and revises part of Table 2; the authors state it changes neither the statistical significance nor the conclusions, and neither quote above depends on it. The 2018 erratum (PubMed 30295942) has not been read; the publisher’s page could not be opened by our tools.
